"You're going to be late"
I looked up at Samantha, an eyebrow cocked in mild
confusion. I was a bit harried, looking for the rest
of the term papers I had finished late last-night, only half a dozen in my
hand.
"Late? Late for what?"
Her lips curved in a laughing smile, and she reached up to
smooth back a clump of wild hair, which I had previousley
been tugging at in frustration.
"School. You've got..."
"Twenty minutes!" I yelped as I looked at my wristwatch, shoving
the papers into my breifcase. With a wild look, I saw
the rest of them sitting neatly on my desk. Of course.
Crafty buggars, those term papers.
Snatching those as well, I shut the lid with a click, dashing out of the room
as Samantha, laughing, follwed at a more demure pace.
As I stopped to straighten myself up a bit, smoothing back
my hair and brushing my shirt off, I felt a tensing behind my eyes, and knew
the Anju was displeased with something. Well, he
could bite me.
I grabbed a glass of orange juice from the table, downing
it quickly to save myself a reprimand from my lovely wife. Leaning down to kiss
the kids, I pecked Eric on the head, who burbled at me happily. Alex, however,
squealed the word 'Daddy' loud enough to make me whince.
Knowing she wanted a proper kiss, I dodged her porridge-encrusted fists, giving
her a smack kiss on the lips. She gave a shrill giggle, and I grinned.
Turning to Samantha, who had a mischevious
glint in her eye, I decided to give her a kiss on the lips too, and quite thouroughly enjoyed it. With a piece of toast shoved into
one hand, I grabbed my briefcase and headed for the door. Halfway down the
walk, Samantha's call stopped me.
"Sabin!"
I turned and rose a brow
expectantly, waiting for a piece of wifely advice, or a reminder to bring home
the bacon.
"I love you. Try to have a nice day, and come home
soon."
My mouth spreading in a wide grin, I winked at her,
nodding my ascent.
"Always, darling. And Sam? I love you too."
She beamed at me, before turning inside and gently
shutting the door behind her. Me, my step a bit lighter, whistled a cheery
tune, and headed off to the University.
