<Title Goes Here>
Once
upon a time, in a land far, far away…
“Hold up a second. Neither is this a land far, far away,
nor is it once upon a time! It never happened!”
Sabin placed his hands
on his hips, his long white hair falling over his shoulders with a soft silky
hiss.
Standing next to him, Ambrose nodded in agreement.
Look, I’m trying to tell a story here. It doesn’t have
to be real.
“Well…”
Well nothing!
You two go get into that darn chibi-fier so we can do
this story right.
“Aww…”
GO! Ahem. Now that that’s out of the way… drat!
“Can’t think of what to say… Can you?”
Arg! Alright, fine, I’ll
do it your way. It wasn’t once upon a time, and it wasn’t far away. But, it was
another universe, with a very different sequence of events…
The
sound of thunder echoed across the valley and along the road leading up towards
the summit as another wave crashed into the shallow cliff face below an old,
careworn house.
Legend
had it that a giant built the house, as it seemed to be made of one entire piece
of stone. But those who lived within thought otherwise. What seemed like a
delicately carved house on the outside, worn by centuries of rain and storms,
was actually a fabulously furbished house with polished oak floors and silk
curtains whereever the eye looked.
All
was quiet in the house. Or, at least would appear to be. If one walked
throughout the halls to the backside of the house, they would hear the sounds
of voices, and then… a child’s scampering feet.
"Here, puppy puppy."
"Want a new hole to say that out of?"
Laughing, Sabin
leaned over the arm of the chair to look down at his wayward cousin.
"Come on, Amby..."
"AM-BROSE!"
Pouting, Sabin slid off the arm and sighed heavily.
The huge library was the favoured
play place for the two tots, now at the aware age of five,
they would seek out what fun they could within the shelves filled with old
books.
Scattered about the room was a desk
and table, as well as an assortment of chairs. The most favoured was a high
back throne with blue velvet covering. It was in this chair that Ambrose sat,
watching his cousin Sabin out of the corner of his
eyes.
"You're no fun, you know
that?"
Ambrose leapt down from the huge
chair and stood facing Sabin.
"How am I no fun, Binny?"
"SABIN!"
Taking his turn to laugh, Ambrose
ducked down and reached out to poke Sabin squarely in
the stomach.
"Binny,
Binny, Binny!"
Spinning about, Ambrose went to all
fours and began running through the house.
With a howl of childish rage, Sabin took off after him, sliding throughout the shadows
when he could to try and catch up. White hair streaked out behind him, fading
to black and back to white again as he passed through one shadow to another.
Glancing behind him, Ambrose saw Sabin was catching up and skidded to a stop. Spinning
about, he took off back the way he came.
“No fair!”
Sabin watched as Ambrose ran
off down the hallway back to the library as he came out of the table’s shadow
near the spot he figured he’d finally catch the half-wolf boy. Tears began to
form and fall from his eyes.
“Ok, whoa.
How is this supposed to be a story?”
Come on guys,
it’s called an introduction. A way to get to know the characters, ya know?
“Ooh, great
introduction. So far, we’ve seen that I’m a fast little wolf-boy and Sabin’s a slow shadow stalker.”
“Hey!”
“Just my
opinion though.”
Sabin
glared at Ambrose and scoffed.
“At least I
have a better description than ‘Half-wolf boy’”
“Oy, that’s true! How come he’s got the better description?”
Cause I’m
still GETTING to yours. It’s supposed to be more Sabin’s
viewpoint than yours right now. But, if I have to keep stopping, I’m not
certain I ever will get to yours…
“Alright, shutting up now. Sabin, you too.”
“Why should
I? I mean I’m not the puppy.”
“Say that one
more time out of context and I swear I will-”
Ah-HEM.
“Oh right.”
Ambrose threw
a punch into Sabin’s shoulder.
“Come on,
show me what a pathetic child you can be.”
“Path… Ooh…
Just you watch.”
Ready? Good.
Now, where was I..? Oh yes.
Ambrose
stopped in his mad dash and turned to look back at Sabin.
Standing on his hind legs, fists on hips, the blond haired, blue-eyed boy shook
his head. The fur along his nose, forehead, cheeks and neck ruffled slightly
with the shakes.
“Cry
baby. Every time something doesn’t go your way; cry, cry, cry.”
“I’m
not a baby!”
“Then
why are you crying again?”
“I
am not!”
Turning
away, Sabin ran to the front door and opened it wide.
The storm raged, as if daring him to step out into it.
Ambrose’s
eyes widened and he cried out after him.
“Sabin! Don’t go outside! Mother
told us…”
“I
don’t care!”
Spinning
to look at Ambrose, Sabin could feel the other two
sets of eyes open on his face. The look that passed over Ambrose’s face as he
stared at the wolf-boy with all six eyes gave him a slight feeling of glee. Giving
a cruel smile, Sabin stepped backwards out the door,
pulling it closed behind him.
Leaping
forward, Ambrose caught the door just as it closed. Wrenching it open, he felt
the sting of the rain as it blasted into his face. Waiting for the wind to
change, he glanced about. Nothing. Nothing
but the open field with the properly trimmed grass. Nothing
but the wall of trees surrounding the yard. Nothing
but the wind-torn sky above the cobblestone road.
There
was no sign of Sabin anywhere.
“Ok. Woah.
Wasn’t this supposed to be a happy story?”
Guys, what
happened to allowing me to tell the tale?
“What
happened to the cute, cuddly, happy-go-lucky tale you promised this would be? I
mean… What did you do to Sabin?”
Ambrose
tapped his foot and scowled.
He’ll return.
Don’t worry. Honestly! Just get back into the scene.
Ambrose
stepped out of the door and looked around, his mouth falling open slightly as
he stared in shock. The storm rumbled once more and began to tamper off. As he
began to jog across the yard, the first rays of sunlight broke through the
clouds. Reaching the line of trees, he glanced up into the branches.
“Not
here.”
“Not
here. Not there. Not up. Not down. Nor Anywhere.”
Ambrose’s
ears twitched and he looked to his right where a tall man with shockingly white
hair stepped out. He was dressed in a formal suit, with a black-belted top hat
upon his head. Hanging from his neck and off his left shoulder was a waist-long
cloak with red-silken lining. Glancing to his face, Ambrose cried out as he saw
the eyes.
“Binny…”
“Yes.
I am Sabin.”
“What
happened? How did you get so big?”
“That’s
funny, I was about to ask why you were so small.”
“Small?
I’ve always been this size. You’re the one who’s changed!”
Sabin shook his head, allowing his hair to fall over his
shoulders.
“It’s
been years since I saw you last. Do you mean to tell me that is your final
form?”
“Final… years? How can it be years?! You just left
the house, and I came out after you!”
“You
never came for me. I waited… for hours before I just left. I came back here
every year on this day to see if you were here. I was just about to leave when
I heard you.”
Ambrose
stepped back and slumped against the tree.
“This
can’t be real…”
“I’m
afraid it is. Now come on Ambrose. Aren’t you glad to see me? Or are you still
upset?”
“Me?
You were the one upset. You left the house when I told you not to.”
Chuckling,
Sabin hung his head and began shaking it slowly back
and forth.
“Ambrose…
Ambrose… Ambrose…”
“Ambrose!”
Cold
water splashed over his face and he sat up quickly. Coughing, Ambrose cleared
his lungs of the water he’d breathed in and glanced up at the white haired man
before him.
“Ah,
wha…”
“You
hit your head fairly badly on the shelf. You alright?”
“Uh…
I guess.”
Glancing
about the room, Ambrose saw an assortment of worried faces staring at him.
Though, none could compare to the two girls standing nearby. One was very
familiar with her straight, shoulder length chestnut brown hair and dark
sparkling blue eyes. The other with her softly furred face
framed by two whitish-gold streaks and long brown hair, beset by platinum-green
eyes.
“Angelina…”
“Yes,
I’m here Ambrose.”
Sitting
next to him, she wrapped her arms about him and buried her face in his chest.
Placing his arms about her, he tried to figure out what all was going on.
The
other girl placed a hand on her hip and sighed.
“You’ve
got the look of someone who’s lost.”
“Umm… just a bit.”
“Well
then, let me explain. I’m Arania, the elven-drow in purple over there,” She waved her hand in her
direction, where the woman in question waved. “Is Kamiki. You’re at our four year Gaia Anniversary
celebration.”
“I
am?”
Sabin laughed and patted Ambrose on the head, gaining a soft
growl from him.
“Aye. I don’t know how they got us all together, but everyone’s
here.”
Scoffing,
Ambrose glanced around at all the faces. Giving another scoff, he was finally
starting to remember. Shrugging, he looked up at Arania
and Kamiki.
“Well
then… Happy Gaiaversary to you
both.”
“Happy Gaiaversary!”
See. Told ya it’d all work out in the end.
“I’m so
confused…” Ambrose whimpered and crouched down, wishing he could go to a half
form to cover his face with his tail. But the suit he was wearing hampering him
from doing so.
Sabin
coughed as he tried to stifle a laugh.
“At least you
knew what was going on. Weren’t you? You’re entire backing me up was a joke!”
“Actually, no. I didn’t know what was going on until Arania
and Kamiki grabbed me as I stepped out the door and
de-chibified me.”
“Acting like
you were… oh.”
Well, all’s
well that ends well, no?
“Why, I outta…”
